Why EMDR Helped—But IEMT Freed Me: A Clinician’s Personal Trauma Story

Discover how EMDR helped but didn’t fully heal me—and how IEMT changed everything. A raw, personal journey through trauma, survival, and real transformation.

From EMDR to IEMT: The Trauma Healing Breakthrough I Never Saw Coming

Healing from trauma isn't linear—and for many of us, it's not a single modality that brings relief, but a series of brave, uncomfortable steps toward peace.

Between my clinical hypnotherapy training and where I am today, my life took a painful detour. A series of traumatic events shattered my nervous system, my home life, and almost broke my spirit. I was eventually diagnosed with complex PTSD.

I had spent years raising a special needs child who’d experienced early trauma. It was otherworldly—unpredictable, heartbreaking, and at times, terrifying. Through this journey, I became the trauma-informed and attuned practitioner I am today. But nothing could prepare me for the moment things escalated in his mid-teens, when a psychotic episode nearly ended in tragedy.

One night, he looked at my husband and said, “One day, one of you is going to wake up to the sound of me strangling the other to death.” That eerie smile—his tone—etched itself into my memory with surgical precision. It became the nightmare I couldn’t wake from, the image that followed me to sleep and greeted me in daylight.

We lived with cameras throughout our home—installed on the advice of a seasoned social worker who once told us, “Children like him… it always ends badly. No matter how much love is given.” She was right. And it was the footage that eventually protected us, legally and emotionally.

I knew I needed help—and fast. I sought out a trauma therapist trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), who also understood the nuances of narcissistic and borderline abuse.

EMDR Helped… But Something Still Felt Off

EMDR wasn’t new to me. I had heard countless stories from clients and colleagues about its power. And to be clear—it did help. After each session, I felt just a little less frozen, a little less haunted.

But there was a cost I hadn’t anticipated.

Each time I sat down with my therapist, I had to retell the most horrifying memory I carried. Word for word. Emotion for emotion. And as a clinical hypnotherapist, I understood that every time we recall trauma in detail, we re-sensitize our nervous system to it. We don't just remember—we relive.

Leaving those sessions, I often felt worse. I cried in the car. I drove distracted. On three separate occasions, I had near-misses on the road—two times I was almost hit, and once I nearly hit someone else. I wasn't grounded. I was reactivated.

And I wondered… was this really healing?

Enter IEMT: The Modality That Finally Set Me Free

A year later, I stumbled upon something called IEMT—Integral Eye Movement Therapy. It sounded similar to EMDR, using eye movement as a neurological catalyst for trauma resolution—but the process was completely different.

Here’s what shocked me most: I didn’t have to retell my story.

IEMT is a content-free modality. That means you don’t have to relive the worst moment of your life to heal from it.

In my first session, the practitioner asked me to call up that same disturbing memory. But something was different.

I couldn’t.

The image that once haunted me… wasn’t there. The sensation in my chest—gone. The shock in my gut—gone. The trauma no longer had a grip on my body, my brain, or my identity. For the first time in years, I didn’t feel the need to escape my own life.

It felt like magic—but it wasn’t. It was science, intuition, and energetics all wrapped into one incredible modality.

Today, I See Miracles Every Week

I now use IEMT regularly in my practice. And almost every time, clients experience the same bewildered freedom I did.

I tell them in advance: “This might feel a little woo-woo. You might think, ‘How is this even working?’ But stay with me.”

And sure enough, when I later ask them to bring up their traumatic memory, I often see them glance around the ceiling, searching.

“It’s weird,” they say. “I know what happened. I know the facts. But I just can’t feel it anymore.”

We laugh. We cry. We celebrate. Because that is what healing can look like: Not a slow crawl through the pain, but a decisive shift out of it.

🌟 Closing Invitation

If you’re carrying trauma in your body, know this: healing doesn’t have to hurt.

There is a way through that doesn’t require reliving it all. IEMT changed my life—and it’s changed the lives of my clients, too.

If you're curious about how it works or wondering if it's right for you, I invite you to book a one-on-one session or explore more at www.healingbeyondtrauma.com.

Let’s rewrite your story—without having to retell it.
