A note from Daron on Sin Eater Empaths:
'What was a Sin Eater? Starting in the late 1680s, and going until the 1880s, between Wales and England, there was a funeral practice known as Sin Eating, where food was passed over, or placed on the chest of the deceased, absorbing the sins of the deceased, and then the Sin Eater would eat the food, thusly taking on the sins. Bread and ale were most commonly used, and then later wine also.
Poor people were hired for this practice, mainly taking the work out of necessity of a free meal, and a little money. Sin eating was a necessary evil per say, not only helping the deceased get into heaven more easily, but it also supposedly kept the dead from walking around the village, as seen in a common saying used by the Sin Eaters performing the ritual; "I give easement and rest to thee dear man, come not down the lane, nor in our meadows, and for thy peace, I pawn my own soul, amen." This practice has also been seen in Ancient Egypt & Greece, the Appalachian Mountains, and even has supposed Pagan origins, but there's very little info on the practice, because of the church influence, and religious turmoil of the time, and it finally shows back up in the protestant era of the late 1700s.
Even though the sin eaters did a huge community service with the ridding of the sins, the practice was illegal at the time, and most sin eaters were shunned, and were outcasts, because people thought that the more sin that they took in, the more evil they became, and would even burn the wooden utensils that the sin eater used after the ritual.
The last known sin eater was Richard Munslow, who died in 1906. He was not poor, but was a respected member of the community, and a farmer. It's believed that he took up sin eating as an act of kindness after 3 of his 4 children all died in the same week.
It's believed that sin eating died out because we have less interaction with the dead with them no longer being displayed in the home, and taken care of elsewhere. However, there are popular references in modern times, in books and stories, and in cinema, the 2003 movie The Order starring the late Heath Ledger was a tale of a magical sin eater, and the secret order that they were a part of...happy eating everyone. 🍞🍺🙂'
