Waking up with racing thoughts and physical anxiety? Explore the hidden differences between daily anxiety and trauma response, plus practical steps to heal nervous system dysregulation and regain your peace.

When I became a full-time stepmom to a special needs child who had been through severe trauma, I was already a high-anxiety person.
I was the girl in college who would hold her breath and sit in agony for an hour rather than walk to the restroom and risk drawing attention to herself. I spent my life walking on eggshells, treating everyone else’s needs as more important than my own.
So when the daily pressure of caregiving hit, I didn't register the shift. I couldn't pinpoint when "normal" stress turned into something far more dangerous.
After two years of parenting, I started waking up every single morning with my heart racing, cold sweats, and a wave of fear before my feet even touched the floor. Sometimes I’d literally jolt awake in panic.
That survival energy dominated my entire day. But because my whole focus was on being a good mom, I didn't see that my quality of life had hit zero. I didn't realize I was running on less than fumes—stuck in the exact cycle I see so many people in today: putting out fires all day, then crashing when there's nothing left.
It stopped being "just anxiety" when the somatic flashbacks and night terrors set in. My body was remembering things my mind hadn't fully processed. But I was "too busy" to get help. Instead, I guilted and shamed myself into working harder, pushing further... straight into depression.
Remember how we talked about people waiting 3 years to get help? That was me.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have used Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) right away to release the trauma, stop the morning panic, and end the night terrors without spending years in talk therapy. It would have saved me so much burnout, depression, and silent resentment.
I’m sharing this today because you don't have to carry survival mode for three years like I did.
